Book Recomendation

Carlos Castaneda's "The Power of Silence" is slightly farfetched when compared to most people's view of the world, but given the context of 337, it makes a lot of sense. It is the maybe factual account of a skeptic apprenticing under a Mexican shaman/magician/wise-man. It explains an elaborate construction of existance. Its general principles remind me a lot of Bruno, as it advocates a universal connecting force, and allows the (washed) individual to become devine.

Schizophrenics are someone considerred to have a mental disorder which distorts they way in which they percieve. Oddly enough we could all be considered schizo's to the average person with our memory palaces; figments of our imagination's that have the possibility to store unlimited amounts of information. Right now My own has a punch of somber students with their heads down in frustration with our penicls frozen inches above the desk while a drunk professor stumbles about with a mug in his hands and green gills etched behind his ears while A certain students has a crooked mischevious smile acrossed his face with glazed eyes and a crooked hat pointing down acroos his left cheek. A giant Calendar flaps in my mind between March 17 and Febraury 20. If this is what my mind has placed in the palace right now, tell me what will happen when i begin placing theory's in them and letting them form into others. What will happen. From another perspective what happens when i begen writing novels and store chapters inside and let them go crazy, who's to say they won't loose control and form into odd things i have no explanation for? Right now I/we all have the beginning of a very real and yet not real world forming inside our memory. Keep this in mind."

This reminded me of a test I took. One of my english teachers in high school administered his final at a coffee shop near campus rather than in the classroom. He did this so he could test students with an oral discussion of the semester's content, rather than an essay or objective test. The teacher's main point of the class was the debate over the existance of an objective moral truth. I was prepared to argue for such a universal truth, but as I walked into the shop and sat down, I noticed a woman sitting by herself at another table. She was having a heated argument with someone across from her, that only she could see. It was then that I realized truth is subjective. Her reality, or perception of reality, was very different from mine. This, however, did not make her wrong. My perception was simply identical to most other people's -maybe, who's to say?

Names, or: everyone's topic

Today's presentations included several on the topic of names, and after reading Tai's most recent post, I made a connection. He mentioned that 337 was one of the few classes where he knew everyone's names. This is true for me as well, and it may be the reason I enjoy the class so much. The use of names allows the reader to identify with the speaker on a more intimate level. Rather than just anyone speaking in class, it's Chris the Scribbler telling a funny story. Now I know something about his Dad also. Too much can be achieved from learning someone's name. I've always been bad with names, hopefully that will change.

Chinese

Last semester I lived in the dorms and my nextdoor neighbor was Chinese. Taking this class has given me a new perspective when listening to him talk on the phone. I don’t understand a word he says, but I always know whether he is speaking to his mom, dad, or a friend. Listening to words that to me mean nothing emphasizes tonality and pace. The Chinese language further underscores these through its ability to flow in a way English cannot. When he speaks to his mother, he assumes a respectful tone, and although he can get carried away, his pace is much slower and his tone less excited. When speaking to his friends, the words he uses are much shorter, suggesting they are slang –or at least less formal diction. Conversations with his father lay somewhere in between formality and unchecked conversation. It is interesting that I never recognized his phone conversations as such striking examples of language’s devices, but before 337 I was unwashed.

Pollock as the Anti-Writing

The emphasis on most writing is its content. The sounds of words and their appearance on the page exists to represent or describe an action, thing, or idea. Authors occasionally experiment with literature’s form, as Shaman Sexson has described James Joyce as doing. However, words are limiting in this endeavor, and the result of such experiments as Finnigans Wake is a book that few people actually read.
The opposite of this, therefore, is Jackson Pollock. His art was not meant to depict content, such as a person or a place; it was meant to simply exist as a byproduct of an action. Pollock’s pieces chronicle his act of painting, and their chaos suggests it was an interesting sight. He would dance and move while violently flinging paint at the canvas. If his dances had any linearity or meaning, it was lost on him. To anyone viewing his work, they can only admire the principle of his attempt to eliminate content and represent pure action. Again, this attempts to reconcile the shortcomings of writing as a method of documentation.

Catching Pockets

We discussed the origins of language as a progression of gesture to speech to writing (3-27). We also talked about how grunts and other sounds attributed to the formation of language. A blog about our own use of these sounds was suggested, and I couldn’t think of a particular instance at the time.
It recently occurred to me that I hate the drawers in my kitchen. The drawer pulls are shaped like a “T”, so they have corners that poke out parallel to the face of the drawer. This would not be a problem, except when I wear sweatpants, the pockets catch. It is as if the drawer grabs me, and it happens all the time. Each time it does, I utter some primeval sound without thinking. Such a response seems to suggest that literacy has not entirely suppressed the basic foundations of communication.

The Alphabet

In class on 2-25 we talked about literacy brainwashing individuals from as early as childhood. It seems that most people’s inability to recite the alphabet backwards supports this claim. Children learn the alphabet through repeated recitation, rather than through understanding. It was surprising to hear the class sing the alphabet together because a cadence developed from the unified rhythm. As a participant, I discovered how automatic the alphabet has become. While reciting it with the rest of the class, my mind was uninhibited and I was able to think about other things.
I’m having trouble deciding what all this represents. The recitation of the alphabet is of the oral tradition in its rhythmic and trance-like qualities, but it stands as an example of the literate tradition’s ability to organize information and present it without any meaning.

Term Paper

Experts on the subject of the oral tradition, most notably Walter Ong, show the oral tradition as at least a departure from, if not threatened by, print and electronic media. Ong’s text was published in 1982, and the advancement of technology that has since taken place serves to expose weaknesses in his argument. Given this assertion, two arguments may be made. First, the recent advancement of media technology has caused social regression, and those exposed to such technology are moving closer to the psychodynamics of orality. Second, the new media has simply served to rekindle those aspects of the oral tradition still existent from before the invention of the alphabet. Far more evidence exists to support the latter. Given current technologies, it would be difficult to argue that modern media does not aid the oral tradition. Printed and electronic documentation fulfills the same purposes as the oral tradition. Each book, although it cannot talk back in as intimate a forum as a personal conversation, stands simply as a statement in the collective, global conversation. Since the invention of the alphabet, the fundamental aspects of the oral tradition have not changed; its forum has simply been expanding. Careful scrutiny reveals the existence of orality’s tenets in modern media. The oral tradition gives the past a place in the present by relating the collective knowledge of previous generations to contemporary society. It facilitates social evolution through its frequent adaptation, and printed and electronic documentation has proven to aid the oral tradition in this endeavor rather than undermine its progress.
Ray Raphael begins his explanation of the purpose of myth and their visual representation in modern American culture by suggesting that, “The visual arts, like the oral tradition, give the past a place in the present.” (Raphael p. 2) Although his argument is concerned with the formation of myths concerning the American Revolution, his statement is too profound to be so limited. It submits that the purpose of myth is not only to provide cultural justification, but to connect present communities with the practical knowledge of previous generations. This bolsters Sean Kane’s point that, “Myths are repositories of practical wisdom.” (Kane p. 39) The oral tradition adapts to augmentations of the collective knowledge and leaves the next generation with a more complete understanding of their world. Given this function, it can be easily argued that modern media, that is, print and electronic documentation, aids the oral tradition.
Books and printed media have recently become basic technologies, as the radio, television, and the internet are touted as revolutionary. However, they all augment the oral tradition identically, and each represents a step in the progression and expansion of mankind’s collective knowledge. Socrates criticizes documented information in his ironically documented conversation with Phaedrus by arguing:
I cannot help feeling, Phaedrus, that writing is unfortunately like painting; for the creations of the painter have the attitude of life, and yet if you ask them a question they preserve a solemn silence. And the same may be said of speeches. You would imagine that they had intelligence, but if you want to know anything and put a question to one of them, the speaker always gives one unvarying answer. And when they have been once written down they are tumbled about anywhere among those who may or may not understand them, and know not to whom they should reply, to whom not: and, if they are maltreated or abused, they have no parent to protect them; and they cannot protect or defend themselves. (Plato pp. 15)

Although books or other forms of documentation cannot communicate directly with their audience, they converse on a much larger scale. The forum in which collective wisdom resides has expanded from the direct, spoken dialogue Socrates was familiar with, to a much larger conversation. Each book, article, blog entry, or television episode offers its own addition to the collective conversation and augments mankind’s knowledge.
In its infancy, documentation technology allowed only for slow collective dialogue. An author wishing to disprove, bolster, or otherwise change any part of the collective wisdom was forced to publish his ideas in order to affect change. The appearance of newspapers and other periodicals facilitated the diffusion of ideas. Letters to the editor expanded the collective discourse to the layperson and allowed an individual to submit minute alterations to be seen by many. The invention of the radio and television further catalyzed this process by allowing ideas to be broadcasted spontaneously, in real time. Callers were able to disagree with or force explanations from news anchors or other guests directly. Of all the advances in technology, however, the internet has proved to expand the forum of discussion and the documentation of collective wisdom the greatest. The internet allows nearly instantaneous conversation through comments on articles, blog sites, and video clips. Most importantly, electronic media has globalized information in a way physical documentation could never have attempted. Sans government censorship, all online content can be accessed from anywhere on earth. Programs are available to translate text instantly, allowing information to transcend language and cultural barriers. Collective wisdom is no longer limited to those within listening distance of a mythteller, but is globally accessible. Additionally, the internet’s human interface allows collective knowledge to adapt more frequently and easily to additional information. Authors are able to edit their documents instantly, rather than being forced to publish sequential editions of their text.
Despite such advantageous advances in technology, it can still be criticized as impersonal and inferior to intimate discourse. Society’s tendency towards direct conversation is affecting the trend in technology towards interaction. Even though there is little interaction between a book’s author and his audience, the progression of technology is working to eliminate such limitations. As electronic media technology has progressed, it has become subject to a change in form. The internet is already shifting from a primarily text-based technology to a multimedia forum. Online video such as youtube.com has proved its usefulness and popularity during the 2008 presidential election. It allowed debate questions to be submitted by individuals not in attendance. Such interaction, when compared to the simple technology of the written word, demonstrates clear advancement.
The expansion of the forum of collective wisdom is falsely perceived as the suppression of the oral tradition. A comparison of modern forms of documentation with the characteristics of oral culture underscores the oral tradition’s perseverance and illustrates its existence in contemporary times. In Orality and Literacy, Walter Ong outlines nine aspects of the oral tradition (Ong p. 37-57). His first characteristic describes the oral tradition as additive rather than subordinate. He uses parataxis as and example of this quality. Just as parataxis eliminates subordination of ideas through its use of coordinating conjunctions, so does modern technology present a democratic forum for information. The internet is free and accessible to anyone, and the expression of information is not subject to the discretion of a publisher or editor. Degrees of credibility do exist, however, as reputable websites censor their content.
Ong asserts that the oral tradition is aggregative rather than analytic by describing the use of epithets as the clustering of information. He explains the breakdown of this clustering in favor of a more formulaic organization of information. A reader of books and physical text is able to reference previous pages to recall details, eliminating the need to attach epithets to describe characters. The speed in which electronic media is able to convey information often rekindles the need for the epithet. When a news broadcast hosts a guest or cuts to a lesser-known reporter, the network posts the individuals name, along with an epithet. Each time the camera cuts back to the interviewee the banner “Steve Johnson: Political Analyst” appears for the viewer’s benefit.
Similar to its aggregative quality, Ong’s third characteristic -redundancy and copiousness- comes from the inability of a listener to reference what has been spoken, as the reader of a book can do. Although this fact still stands, the argument that documentation has eliminated the need for redundancy is fundamentally flawed. The availability of multiple texts on a common subject still allows a reader to converse with the collective knowledge. The reader is able to reference another author’s ideas on the same subject to eliminate confusion. The vast number of chicken recipes contained in books and online demonstrates far more redundancy than the repetition of a single recipe by one cook.
Print and electronic media easily assimilated orality’s conservative and traditionalist quality. Oral societies emphasized the importance of tradition and upheld knowledge and “those wise old men and women who specialize in conserving it (Ong p. 41).” The importance of those individuals is equally apparent in the literate culture. Religious texts such as the Bible and the Koran are held in higher regard by many than diversions from traditional schools of thought, such as John Barth’s postmodernist work Lost in the Funhouse.
The employment of hypertext by electronic documentation has brought modern media back to the oral tradition’s proximity to the human life world. Ong explains that the Iliad illustrates this characteristic by attaching detailed information to a list of ships in order to provide a connection to the listener and facilitate their memory (Ong p. 42). Hypertext functions in the same way. Words in a list can be clicked on to provide detailed information. Although this is not intended to aid the memory of the reader, anecdotes nevertheless expedite retention and understanding. Hypertext also allows electronic text to mimic the oral tradition’s attempt to remain situational rather than abstract. It minimizes generalizations and strives to limit the frame of reference to a specific example. Hypertext allows the author to elaborate on a specific term while simultaneously maintaining the flow of the text and to avoid confusing the reader.
Ong also describes the oral tradition as agonistically toned, but provides the reader with evidence of this characteristic in the practice of flyting in modern cultures (Ong p. 44). Although not as striking an example as flyting, the banter of political pundits fighting for their turn to speak during a news broadcast demonstrates the employment of agonistic tone in modern media.
Although it is the goal of many print and electronic media sources to remain objectively distanced, they still exhibit the oral tradition’s empathetic and participatory characteristics. Documents created to report both current and historical events are judged on their impartiality to their subject matter, yet they still strive to move the reader or listener through their delivery of information. Oftentimes the subject matter alone lends itself to empathy. An account of the holocaust, however objective, still evokes emotion from even the most stolid audience.
Ong asserts that homeostasis within an oral community is achieved through the fluid definition of words and the flexibility of oral records. Although both poetry and prose literature employ the layered meaning of words, this practice has little relevancy in informal media. The modern practice of inventing terms stands testament to the oral tradition’s disconnection of their words from archaic meanings. The lack of confusion over the use of the term “twitter” by news agencies illustrates this. Although the term has been recently coined, readers and listeners understand it to mean the instantaneous publication of brief journal entries, not the sound of a songbird.
The existence of Ong’s characteristics of the oral tradition in modern print and electronic media suggest its continued existence and underscores its merits. Documentation augments orality in the name of progress, and in doing so adheres to the oral tradition’s basic principle of adaptation. The argument for the preservation of the oral tradition exactly as it was, is based on nostalgia, and ironic, given that the oral tradition has always been adapting. Despite changes to its content, it has always stood as the collective knowledge compounded over generations, for the benefit of the current society. This function persists. Now, however, assertions, opinions, and convictions can be referenced instantaneously through printed or electronic media and are available to those outside the earshot of Socrates’s soapbox.

Term Paper Idea?

Potential thesis:

The oral tradition gives the past a place in the present by relating the collective knowledge of past generations to contemporary society. It facilitates social evolution through its frequent adaptation, and printed and electronic documentation has proven to aid the oral tradition in this endeavor rather than undermine its progress.

I find it hard to believe that the oral tradition is not aided by modern technology. I see it as fulfilling the same purpose that is always has. Each book, although it cannot talk back in as intimate a forum as a personal conversation, stands simply as a statement in the collective, global conversation. The only change that has taken place to the oral tradition since the invention of the alphabet is the expansion of the oral tradition’s forum. The oral tradition has always stood as the collective knowledge of all generations, for the benefit of the current society. It still does, except assertions, opinions, and convictions can be referenced instantaneously through printed or electronic media and are available to those outside the earshot of Socrates’s soapbox.

Smoke and Mirrors

I chose beaches and lifeguard towers along the coast of San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, and Sunset Beach where I work in the summer as my memory theater for three reasons. I can recall them without effort, I have had many memorable experiences at each to relate objects to, and the theater is arranged linearly, so I will no skip over any item. I alphabetized my list of failed banks mostly to become familiar with the names. I also thought at the time that the order would aid me if I forgot the name of any particular bank (this was before I realized the effectiveness of the system).
I started at the southernmost landmark and worked my way north.
I began with Alpha Bank & Trust at the San Onofre power plant, and associated “Alpha” with nuclear radiation.
Next Ameribank is at Old Man’s beach and people are having a 4th of July BBQ at the fire pits there.
AmTrade International is at Lower Trestles because the Amtrac train travels along that beach.
ANB Financial is at Upper Trestles and I can see several snooty executives congregating and not belonging at the beach in any way.
The Bank of Ephraim is at Cottons Point, because there is a painting in a doughnut shop of a wave at Cottons breaking in an a-frame.
The Bank of Honolulu is at Califea because the crowds are like Wikiki in the summer.
Bank of Sierra Blanca is at T-Street, because a road near that beach is named after Junipero Serra.
Connecticut Bank of Commerce is on the San Clemente Pier because the restaurant on the pier is a symbol of commerce.
The Dollar Savings bank is at North Beach, where parking is free.
Douglas National Bank is in the Capo 2 lifeguard tower, and I can see a guard named Douglas working there.
Downey Savings and Loan is in Capo 1, because the window in that tower is always filthy and Downey is a cleaning product.
First Alliance Bank & Trust Company is at Doheney Beach, because that is where I first remember learning to surf.
First Georgia Community Bank is in Dana Point Harbor, and I can see tourists from Georgia standing by the tower.
First Heritage Bank is at Killer Dana Cove, a place of heritage for Dana Point.
First Integrity Bank is at the SC6 tower for no apparent reason.
First National Bank of Nevada is at the DS3 tower, and I remember having a conversation with a guard there about Lake Mead, in Nevada.
First Priority Bank is in DS2 because rookie guards work that tower and we have to remind them of their priorities.
I can see someone named Franklin standing in DS1 for Franklin Bank.
SC4 flys an American flag for Freedom Bank.
Guaranty National Bank of Tallahassee is at SC3, and I can see a friend trying to say that 5 times fast.
Hamilton Bank is at SC2 because it is near the Ritz Carlton and I can see someone named Hamilton staying there.
Hume Bank is at SC1 because we had a drowning two years ago and it reminds us of the word.
IndyMac Bank is at Heroines Beach and I see a Heroine who lost all her money tearing her hair.
Integrity Bank is in Three Arch Bay because the people that live there seem to have integrity.
Main Street Bank is in the next cove over and someone is there singing “Down on Main Street.”
Meridian Bank is at 9th Street Beach and I can see a compass rose, for some reason this reminds me of the prime meridian.
Metropolitan Savings Bank is at 10th Street Beach because it is always crowded.
Miami Valley Bank is at Tortuava because it is a wealthy private community and I assume there are a lot of those in Miami.
National State Bank of Metropolis is at Tablerock and I met a man there one time that was needlessly complecated, like the name of this bank.
Net 1st National Bank is at West Street and I see someone with a net.
Netbank is at Camels Point and is a continuation of the last one.
New Century Bank is at Aliso 3, because it is in a new cove.
Nextbank is the next bank in the order, so it is at Aliso 2.
Oakwood Deposit Bank Company is at Aliso 3 and someone walked there from the lumberyard.
PFF Bank and Trust is at Treasure Island Beach, ironically.
Plaski Savings Bank is at the Ebay 2 tower and I can see my friend named Polowski sitting there.
Reliance Bank is at the unit 5722’s tower because the other two towers at that beach rely on him.
Security Pacific Bank is at Ebay 1 because they keep their own area of the Pacific secure.
Silver State Bank is at River Jetties because the tower is right next to the State Lifeguards’ beaches.
Sinclair National Bank is in Sunset 5 tower and the guard is reading The Jungle.
Southern Pacific Bank is in Sunset 10 and the railroad is running under the tower.
Superior Bank is in Sunset 15, and it is taller than the others.
The Bank of Alamo is in Sunset 21 and is getting shot at.
The Colombian Bank and Trust is in Sunset 26 and the druglords are shooting at the Alamo.
The Community Bank is the unit 5711 and the operator is a nice person that seems to know everyone.
The Farmer’s Bank of Cheneyville is 5712, driven by Dick Cheney with a Stetson hat on.
The First National bank of Blanchardville is a long name that can barely fit the 5721 because it is a small Jeep.
The Malta National Bank is in 5731 and is driven by an operator that would appreciate such a play on words.
The Universal Federal Savings Bank is Miss Universe driving 5732.
Washington Mutual Bank is 5741, and I can remember it because it is the last one.

Dimitri Martin and Parataxis Attempted

Last night I was watching television and there was a new show by Dimitri Martin and he had several skits with striking relevancy to our class. He performed one skit satirically dressed as a rapper and put on the most pathetic display of flighting I have ever seen and he talked about cliches in another skit and he said "If I went back in time and said cliches I would be original" and I laughed because he's right.

As I write this I realize how difficult it is to stay in parataxis. I guess I have been in the habit of subordinating and diversifying my word choice for too long. It was interesting to see how connected Dimitri Martin's comedy is to the oral tradition and the content of our class.

Thanks to a Smashed Thumb

I am finding more and more connections to this class throughout my daily life. Two days ago my girlfriend closed her thumb in the trunk of the car. Later that night we sat at the table and played cards, but I had to shuffle for her because her thumb was still hurting. Luckily the injury was not severe and after the card game I forgot all about it.
Tonight we were playing cards again and her thumb came to mind. Most interesting, however, was that the image of her thumb came into my thoughts, not simply the thought of her well-being. I believe that the image was stimulated by my loci -the kitchen table. I had unintentionally developed a memorable image and placed it in a specific loci within a memory theater.
Immediately after the image came to mind, I asked her if her thumb was feeling better and laughed. I was laughing at how obviously this class is affecting me, but she mistook it for a joke at her expense.

I grew up in a furniture gallery. Not really, but you would be hard pressed to disagree. My mom couldn't stand to give up furniture, so years of family heirlooms and impulsive window shopping led to a cluttered house. I don't know yet whether this will prove too difficult a memory theater, or if the innumerable drawers, cabinets, shelves, and trunks of curiosity will facilitate a vast catalog of items without much trouble. I have several other ideas for memory theaters: all places I frequent and know well, but I plan to put my mom's house to the test by using the garage. Although garages are intended for cars, mine seldom seems to have enough room. Kayaks, bicycles, a work bench, a refrigerator, and a myriad of other items sit where the cars should be. For this reason, I will begin my memory theater in the garage. If I am able to remember where I put my items for recollection and my memorable scenes in the garage, the rest of the house should not be a problem. To help myself, I have remembered all I can about the garage as it was the last time I saw it, and (in my mind) cleaned it. It's too bad I have spent so much effort cleaning and it is only in my head... But now I have a tidy memory theater with many compartments ready to be filled.
